PhD student position in Environment and Natural Resources - HI17030182The Environment and Natural Resources graduate programme at the University of Iceland invites applications for a PhD position in Environment and Natural Resources focusing on the value of ecosystem services in the Arctic. The successful candidate will join the Nordic Research Center of Excellence, ARCPATH (Arctic Climate Predictions: Pathways to Resilient, Sustainable Societies) that aims to Contribute to responsible development in the Arctic. The project is funded for five years by a Center of Excellence grant given by NordForsk.

On Thursday, 9 March 2017, at 16.30 Dr Astrid Ogilvie will give her lecture, Sagas and Science: Documentary Evidence of Changes in Climate and Sea-Ice Incidence in Iceland from the Settlement to the late 1800s. The University of Akureyri is accepting applications for the Nansen visiting professorship based on a cooperation between the governments of Iceland and Norway. The professorship is awarded to individuals to conduct their research on Arctic issues on common interest between Iceland and Norway. For the 2017/2018 scholarship the selection committee seeks a candidate interested in contributing a year to focus their research effort on technological, legal, political or social issues related to the Arctic with special emphasis on issues that are shared between Iceland and Norway, with examples such as natural resource management, climate change, resource extraction and governance in the Arctic.

IASC Medals are awarded in recognition of exceptional and sustained contributions to the understanding of the Arctic. A maximum of one award is made each year, assuming that there is a nominee of appropriate quality. The award of medals is normally by the President of IASC during the Arctic Science Summit Week (or exceptionally at another major international meeting) following the ratification of the award.

2016 Stefansson Memorial Lecture will be held at Dartmouth College, USA, Thursday, November 3, 2016. Hugh Beach, Professor Emeritus of Ethnology, Uppsala University, Sweden calls his lecture Managing the Wilderness: Arctic Perspectives. On Friday, November 4, 2016 there will be a panel discussion: People, policy and adaptations to rapid change in the Arctic: The role of multidisciplinary research and international collaboration for sustainability.

Two PhD positions are available at Nord University in Bodö, Norway, connected with a new Nordic Center of Excellence project – CLINF.
