The Institute has a small but growing library (see complete collection) specialising in arctic issues with an emphasis on communities and sustainable development. The library is above all intended for the SAI staff and its visiting scholars, but is also open to other interested who can, with special permission, borrow books and other material. First edition of The Friendly Arctic (The Story of Five Years in Polar Regions) by Vilhjálmur Stefánsson, published byThe Macmillan Company in 1921. Ársæll Árnason published an Icelandic translation of the book in 1938 (Heimsskautslöndin unaðslegu).
