In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Stefansson Arctic Institute, we joined hands with the Institute of Arctic Studies at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College in the US and the University of Akureyri in organizing and hosting the Arctic Days in Akureyri on November 15-17.
The event comprised various seminars, meetings, and classroom discussions, but the high point was the Stefansson Memorial Lecture on November 16th at the University of Akureyri. The 2023 lecture was titled Keeping the Flame of Arctic Cooperation Alive in Difficult Times and was delivered by Dr. Oran R. Young, professor emeritus at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at the University of California Santa Barbara. Professor Young delivered the first Stefansson Memorial Lecture in Akureyri in 1998. Find out more about his work here.
Professor Young also participated in a class of the Polar Law program course Arctic Economies together with 20 international graduate students and undergraduate seniors. On the 17th we came together in a seminar with local and international experts to discuss issues of Arctic collaboration in research and international institutional collaboration during times of conflict in Europe.
The organizers are pleased with the outcomes of the events, and we extend our gratitude to our international guests and local experts for attending and contributing to constructive discussions.
