The Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate has published on the Government Consultation Portal a proposal for the Vilhjálmur Stefánsson Arctic Institute to become part of the University of Akureyri.
The merger concerns a part of the proposed changes to the institutional system of the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Climate, aiming, among other things, to simplify it significantly, enhance knowledge and academic community, and better utilize expertise, infrastructure, and data. When analyzing the position of the Vilhjálmur Stefánsson Arctic Institute, consideration was given, among other factors, to the assessment of the National Audit Office, which deemed it most appropriate for the institute to be directly under the University of Akureyri.
